Hills to Ocean
Average road speed in Sri Lanka is about 40 km/h in the lowlands and 30–35 km/h in the hills. Door-to-door times for the transfers our routes actually use, plus what the expressway network does and does not cover.

Guide

Realistic drive times

The island is small. The roads are slow. This is the gap that ruins more itineraries here than anything else.

Sri Lanka is about the size of Ireland. Looking at a map, it seems reasonable to see the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the south coast in a week. It is not, and the reason is not distance.

Average road speed runs about 40 km/h in the lowlands and 30 to 35 km/h in the hills. Kandy to Ella is 120 kilometres and takes six to seven hours, because the road is single-lane, mountainous, and impossible to overtake a lorry on. Passing through Colombo at rush hour adds an hour to ninety minutes to anything.

The expressways, accurately

The E01 Southern Expressway is fully open: roughly 222 km from Kottawa to Matara and on toward Hambantota, at 100 km/h. It is genuinely transformative, and it is the reason a five-night south-coast break is worth doing where a five-night Cultural Triangle break is not.

The E04 Central Expressway is the one people get wrong. Only the Mirigama to Kurunegala section, about 41 km, is open to traffic. Kadawatha to Mirigama and Kurunegala to Dambulla are still under construction. Some 2026 coverage claims the Dambulla section has opened; toll operators say otherwise. Until someone on the ground confirms it, we treat Colombo to Sigiriya as four to four and a half hours.

Transfer times we plan against

Realistic door-to-door times for each leg

  • Colombo to Arugam Bay

    7–8.5 hours

    Note
Too long for one day in comfort. Break it in the hills or at Udawalawe.
  • Arugam Bay to Bandaranaike Airport

    7–8.5 hours

    Note
Genuinely too long for a departure day. Break it overnight, or fly from Batticaloa when the schedule allows.
  • Kandy to Ellaby train

    6.5–7.5 hours

    Note
Same clock time as the road and an entirely different day. This is one of the best things in the country, and we time it so travellers are in the doorway when the mist lifts. Reserved seats need booking well ahead.
  • Kandy to Ella

    6–7 hours

    Note
The worst day of any itinerary that includes it. Mountainous, single lane, and impossible to overtake a lorry. Use the train instead unless there is a compelling reason not to.
  • Trincomalee to Colombo

    5.5–6.5 hours

  • Negombo to Trincomalee

    5.5–6.5 hours

    Note
A full day. Worth breaking at Dambulla if the schedule allows.
  • Kandy to Udawalawe National Park

    5.5–6.5 hours

  • Negombo to Udawalawe National Park

    5–6 hours

    Note
Expressway to the south then inland. Long, but it puts you at the park gate for a dawn drive the next morning.
  • Ella to Mirissa

    4.5–5.5 hours

    Note
The drop from the hills to the coast. Long, but it passes Udawalawe, so an afternoon safari turns a transfer day into a proper one.
  • Nuwara Eliya to Bandaranaike Airport

    4.5–5.5 hours

    Note
Down out of the hills and across the lowlands. Departure days from Nuwara Eliya need a full morning and an early start.
  • Yala National Park to Galle

    4–5 hours

    Note
Long enough to need its own day. Breaking it at Mirissa or Weligama is usually the better call.
  • Arugam Bay to Yala National Park

    4–5 hours

  • Bandaranaike Airport to Udawalawe National Park

    4–5 hours

    Note
Southern Expressway to Pelmadulla or Hambantota, then inland. The reason a three-night safari break is possible at all; it still eats most of an arrival day.
  • Colombo to Sigiriya

    4–4.5 hours

    Note
Long. Best done as the first move of the day, and the reason a Cultural Triangle trip needs seven nights rather than five.
  • Bandaranaike Airport to Sigiriya

    3.5–4.5 hours

    Note
Shorter than from the city because it skips Colombo entirely.
  • Colombo to Dambulla

    3.5–4.5 hours

  • Ella to Arugam Bay

    3.5–4.5 hours

    Note
The link that makes an eastern-season hill-and-coast route work.
  • Anuradhapura to Jaffna

    3.5–4.5 hours

  • Negombo to Sigiriya

    3.8–4.5 hours

    Note
Starting from Negombo rather than Colombo saves the worst of the city and makes this a morning rather than a day.
  • Negombo to Dambulla

    3.5–4.3 hours

  • Negombo to Anuradhapura

    3.5–4.3 hours

  • Colombo to Kandy

    3–4 hours

    Note
The Kandy link of the Central Expressway is still under construction. Until it opens this stays a slow climb.
  • Ella to Yala National Park

    3–4 hours

  • Mirissa to Bandaranaike Airport

    3–4 hours

    Note
Expressway most of the way, but the last hour is Colombo. Never schedule this against a morning flight.
  • Negombo to Kandy

    3–4 hours

  • Weligama to Bandaranaike Airport

    3–4 hours

    Note
Expressway most of the way, but the last hour is Colombo. Never schedule against a morning flight.
  • Wilpattu National Park to Negombo

    3–3.8 hours

  • Polonnaruwa to Kandy

    3–3.8 hours

  • Yala National Park to Mirissa

    3–3.8 hours

  • Jaffna to Mannar

    3–3.8 hours

  • Udawalawe National Park to Galle

    3–3.8 hours

  • Kandy to Bandaranaike Airport

    3–3.8 hours

  • Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) to Ellaby train

    2.8–3.5 hours

    Note
The best stretch of the Kandy–Ella line without the full day aboard. The pragmatic choice for travellers short on time or patience.
  • Bandaranaike Airport to Galle

    2.5–3.3 hours

    Note
Expressway the whole way via the Outer Circular.
  • Sigiriya to Trincomalee

    2.5–3.3 hours

  • Sigiriya to Kandy

    2.5–3.3 hours

  • Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

    2.5–3.3 hours

    Note
Slow and beautiful. Tea estates the whole way, so it wants stops built in rather than treating as pure transfer.
  • Wilpattu National Park to Sigiriya

    2.5–3.3 hours

  • Ella to Udawalawe National Park

    2.5–3 hours

    Note
The descent from the hills. Ears pop.
  • Nuwara Eliya to Ella

    2–2.8 hours

  • Udawalawe National Park to Mirissa

    2–2.8 hours

  • Mannar to Wilpattu National Park

    2–2.8 hours

  • Bandaranaike Airport to Bentota

    2–2.5 hours

    Note
Outer Circular onto the Southern Expressway, skipping the city. The transfer the Ayurveda centres are built around, and short enough to do on arrival rather than after a night near the airport.
  • Colombo to Galle

    1.5–2.3 hours

    Note
Southern Expressway. The fastest long transfer in the country.
  • Yala National Park to Udawalawe National Park

    1.5–2.3 hours

  • Sigiriya to Anuradhapura

    1.5–2 hours

  • Colombo to Hikkaduwa

    1.5–2 hours

    Note
    Southern Expressway.
  • Colombo to Bentota

    1.3–1.8 hours

    Note
    Southern Expressway.
  • Bandaranaike Airport to Colombo

    45 min–1.5 hours

    Note
E03 expressway most of the way. The spread is city traffic at the far end.
  • Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa

    1–1.5 hours

  • Anuradhapura to Wilpattu National Park

    1–1.5 hours

  • Colombo to Negombo

    45 min–1.3 hours

  • Galle to Mirissa

    45 min–1.3 hours

  • Galle to Weligama

    30–54 min

  • Hikkaduwa to Galle

    30–54 min

  • Bandaranaike Airport to Negombo

    18–36 min

    Note
The reason we start first nights in Negombo rather than Colombo after a long-haul arrival.
  • Mirissa to Weligama

    15–30 min

Take the train where there is one

The Kandy to Ella road is the worst day of any itinerary that includes it. The same journey by train takes about the same time and is one of the best things in the country. We book reserved seats and time the departure so you are in the doorway when the mist lifts. Where a road transfer has a rail alternative, take it.
