Nature means four quite different holidays here, and confusing them is how people end up on the wrong trip. Some want the view without the climb. Some want the climb. Some want to not leave the sand. Some are here for the animals and would trade every beach for one good morning in a park.

The views, the tea country, the water, without the climb
You want to be somewhere beautiful and stay there a while. Tea terraces, a waterfall you can reach without a two-hour scramble, a verandah with the right outlook and a book you might actually finish. You are not lazy; you have simply worked out that a holiday spent recovering from the holiday is a poor trade. Two nights minimum everywhere. The train rather than the van.

Hiking, surf and the parts that need an early start
You would rather earn the view. Adam's Peak overnight, the Knuckles ridge, a week of learning to surf properly rather than one lesson for the photograph. You want the days full and the evenings honest, and you would prefer we told you which walks are genuinely hard rather than describing everything as moderate. Season matters enormously to you, because the swell and the trails run on opposite calendars.

The coast, and not much else
You are not here for the ruins. You want warm water, a stretch of sand that is not shoulder to shoulder, somewhere to eat fish within walking distance, and the option of doing absolutely nothing for four days running. The only real decision is which coast, and that is entirely a question of when you are coming: the south runs December to April, the east runs May to September, and getting it wrong means a week of rough grey sea.

Leopards, elephants and whales, in the months they are findable
You will get up at half past four without complaint. You would rather spend three hours waiting at a waterhole than tick four parks in a week, and you know the difference between a sighting and a guarantee. You want to be told honestly which parks are crowded and which reward patience, and you want the trip built around the dry season, because that is when the animals are findable rather than merely present.
